In 2002, when the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) first approached me about chairing a fundraising effort, my wish was that our community our rally behind this organization and their goal to prevent, treat and cure lupus. Now, as we begin the preparations for the 5th Annual Northern Michigan Walk with Us to Cure Lupus event, I am thrilled, and thankful to announce that in 2007 we will surpass the $250,000 mark in total dollars raised.
The date for the 5th annual walk is set for Saturday, June 16 at Petoskey’s Bayfront Park. As I continue my role as Walk Chairman, I would like to encourage your to join our sponsorship team in this anniversary year.
Many plans for this anniversary walk are in place, including an appearance by the Petoskey High School Steel Drum Band. Each of our walks has seen great community cooperation and an incredible enthusiasm from our walker participants. That this regional community can generate that type of interest and dedication is so amazing. Awareness about lupus is also increasing as a direct result of our event. We had strong media sponsorship from Lite 96 FM, our NBC affiliate, WPBN/WTOM, and the local newspapers. Lupus patients in the northern Michigan area are no longer “suffering in silence” and we intend to keep it that way by providing a voice as we plan our 5th annual event.
As with the first four walks ALL the proceeds from the Walk with Us to Cure Lupus event will benefit the research projects of the ALR. All of our operating expenses are underwritten by the ALR Board of Directors. This is just one of the many reasons why I believe in what the Alliance is doing. The left side of this folder will provide you with all the latest ALR information and updates in lupus-related research. The ALR’s sole mission is to support research into the ways to prevent, diagnose, treat and ultimately cure lupus. Their work affirms my belief that this truly is the best place to direct funds--those which support research that will lead to new treatments and a cure.
The sponsorship description and confirmation sheets for the 2007 event are enclosed. And if you haven’t seen the ALR’s website (www.lupusresearch.org) and the Petoskey page, I would encourage you to do so.
We look forward to hearing from you and having you on our team again this year. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (231) 487-2150 or Walk Coordinator, Amy Gillard at (231) 347-4775.
Thank you for your consideration!
Sincerely,
Charles J. Huebner, MD
